Coroner Candidate Banek Calls for Sen. Terry Link to Step Down

August 22, 2020

For immediate release

Democratic Lake County Coroner candidate Jennifer Banek has released this statement regarding State Sen. Terry Link:

"As a precinct committee person, I joined a majority of my colleagues and called for a meeting to select new party leadership, and I am calling on Sen. Link to immediately step down from his post as Party Chair and resign his seat in the Illinois Senate. The people of Lake County deserve honest representation, not political games and distractions.

"The presumption of innocence exists in our courtrooms, but we must hold our elected officials and community leaders to a higher standard."

Banek is a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), also known as a nurse anesthesiologist.

As a Captain in the Army Reserve, Banek treated soldiers on a recent deployment in the Mideast. She was elected to the Cook Memorial Library District Board, based in Libertyville, in 2018. She and her husband have four children.

Banek is also a board member for the Illinois Association of Nurse Anesthetists (IANA) and a committee member for the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.

Coroner Candidate Banek Earns Illinois PAC Endorsement

For immediate release

LIBERTYVILLE — Jennifer Banek announced today that she has been endorsed by Farm Team PAC, a political action committee founded by Congresswoman Lauren Underwood to elect exceptional candidates to state and local office across the 14th congressional district.

“An experienced nurse anesthetist, Army Reserve Captain, dedicated public servant and a mom of four, Jennifer will bring an incredible diversity of experience to Lake County, and I’m proud to endorse her for Lake County Coroner,” Congresswoman Underwood said.

Banek joins 17 other state and local candidates across northern Illinois receiving an endorsement.

“I’m grateful for this vote of confidence from Lauren Underwood and the Farm Team PAC,” Banek said. “I’m campaigning hard to open up the operations of the Coroner’s Office to guarantee taxpayers’ money is well spent. Reducing preventable deaths from opioid overdoses, guns, and suicide will also be a high priority.”

Congresswoman Underwood launched the Farm Team PAC in September 2019 to support candidates in various state and local offices, including the statehouse, county office, county boards, and the courts. The Farm Team PAC will recruit, train, and financially support candidates in DeKalb, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, and Will counties. Challenger Banek Calls Coroner’s Pay Raise Bid ‘Shameful’

May 11, 2020
For immediate release

GREEN OAKS—Coroner candidate Jennifer Banek is urging the Lake County Board to follow the lead of its financial and administrative committee and freeze the pay of the county coroner for the next four years.

“Requesting a raise during this healthcare and economic crisis is shameful,” Banek said. “While we are facing double-digit unemployment rates, it is insensitive and irresponsible to consider raises for our county officials,” she added. “County officials have a guaranteed paycheck, unlike many Lake County residents.”

The County Board is expected to vote on the salary freeze at its Tuesday, May 12, meeting.

The County Board’s Financial and Administrative Committee voted April 16 to freeze the salaries of three elected county officials for four years. County officials’ salaries must be set six months before they take office, and the coroner is one of three officials who will face voters in November.

While requesting the salary increase before the committee, Cooper, a dentist, said that “like many people in this country, I cannot survive on one salary alone.” Coroner Cooper’s annual salary is $127, 874 plus $6,500 from the state.

“The County Board shouldn’t tie its hands by committing to a raise when the board is slashing expenses amid the pandemic,” Banek said. “We don’t know when the economy will bounce back.”

Banek, a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), or nurse anesthesiologist, is in the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic as she works in intensive care units and surgical centers in the Chicago metro area and southeastern Wisconsin.

Banek is a board member for the Illinois Association of Nurse Anesthetists (IANA) and a committee member for the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.

She is also a member of the Cook Memorial Library Board and a Captain in the U.S. Army Reserve. Banek was mobilized to Qatar from November 2019 through January 2020.
